Also known as: B. longum, Bifido longum
Bifidobacterium longum is a foundational member of the human gut microbiome from birth. It supports digestive comfort, immune balance, and emerging research links it to stress and mood regulation via the gut-brain axis.
Bifidobacterium longum is one of the earliest colonizers of the infant gut and remains a dominant species throughout life. It produces short-chain fatty acids, particularly acetate, which nourish the intestinal lining and lower gut pH to inhibit pathogenic organisms. B. longum has demonstrated the ability to alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including bloating and abdominal pain, in randomized controlled trials. Notably, the B. longum 1714 strain has shown anxiolytic effects in human studies, reducing perceived stress and cortisol levels, positioning it as a promising psychobiotic. It also supports immune regulation by promoting regulatory T-cell differentiation and modulating inflammatory cytokine production.
Clinical trials show B. longum supplementation significantly reduces bloating, abdominal pain, and bowel irregularity in IBS patients.
The 1714 strain of B. longum has been shown to lower cortisol levels and reduce self-reported stress in healthy volunteers in a double-blind trial.
