Also known as: Vitex agnus-castus, Vitex, Monk's Pepper
Chasteberry is the fruit of the chaste tree, with well-established use in managing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and cycle irregularities. It acts on the pituitary gland to modulate prolactin levels and support hormonal balance.
Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) is the fruit of the chaste tree, a deciduous shrub native to the Mediterranean region and Central Asia. It has been used since antiquity — Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Pliny the Elder all described its use for gynecological complaints. The berries contain bicyclic diterpenes (clerodadienols), iridoid glycosides (aucubin, agnuside), flavonoids (casticin), and essential oils. Chasteberry's primary mechanism involves dopaminergic activity at D2 receptors in the anterior pituitary, which suppresses prolactin secretion. Elevated prolactin is associated with PMS symptoms, luteal phase defects, and menstrual irregularities. Multiple well-designed clinical trials and systematic reviews support its efficacy for PMS symptom relief, including breast tenderness, mood changes, and bloating. The German Commission E and the European Medicines Agency have approved Vitex preparations for PMS and menstrual cycle disturbances.
Systematic reviews of randomized trials demonstrate that Vitex agnus-castus significantly reduces PMS symptom severity, including irritability, breast tenderness, bloating, and headaches, compared to placebo.
By modulating prolactin levels, Chasteberry can help normalize the luteal phase and improve cycle regularity in women with mild hyperprolactinemia or luteal phase defects.
