Also known as: OPC, Proanthocyanidins
Grape seed extract is a potent source of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), polyphenolic compounds with strong antioxidant properties. It is widely studied for cardiovascular protection and its ability to support vascular integrity.
Grape seed extract (Vitis vinifera) contains high concentrations of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), a class of polyphenols with antioxidant activity 20–50 times greater than vitamins C and E. OPCs protect endothelial cells, reduce LDL oxidation, and improve nitric oxide bioavailability, supporting healthy blood pressure and vascular function. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant reductions in systolic blood pressure and improvements in flow-mediated dilation. Grape seed extract also shows anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB signaling and reducing markers such as C-reactive protein. Its collagen-stabilizing properties make it beneficial for skin elasticity and wound healing. Grape seed extract is generally well tolerated and available as standardized capsules, tablets, and liquid extracts.
Meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials show grape seed extract significantly reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure, particularly in younger and pre-hypertensive populations.
OPCs from grape seeds scavenge free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and protect against oxidative DNA damage in multiple clinical and preclinical studies.
Grape seed extract enhances endothelial nitric oxide production and improves flow-mediated dilation, contributing to better arterial flexibility and blood flow.
Once daily with a meal
Look for extracts standardized to ≥95% proanthocyanidins. Effects on blood pressure typically appear after 6–8 weeks.
Once daily with food
Lower doses are sufficient for general antioxidant benefits.
Consistent OPC content and convenience
Faster absorption and flexible dosing
