Also known as: Hibiscus sabdariffa, Roselle
Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a flowering plant whose calyces are rich in anthocyanins and organic acids. It is best known for its clinically supported blood-pressure-lowering effects and has a long tradition as a tart, ruby-colored herbal tea.
Hibiscus sabdariffa, commonly known as roselle, has been consumed for centuries across Africa, Asia, and Central America as a medicinal tea and culinary ingredient. The deep-red calyces contain high concentrations of anthocyanins (delphinidin and cyanidin glycosides), polyphenolic acids, and organic acids such as hibiscus acid. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that daily consumption of hibiscus tea or standardized extract significantly reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, likely through ACE-inhibitory activity and endothelial nitric oxide enhancement. Hibiscus also exhibits lipid-lowering properties, with studies showing modest reductions in total cholesterol and LDL. Its potent antioxidant capacity has been linked to reduced oxidative stress markers. Hibiscus is generally well tolerated and widely available as dried calyces for tea, capsules, and liquid extracts.
A meta-analysis of five randomized controlled trials found that hibiscus tea consumption significantly reduced systolic blood pressure by an average of 7.58 mmHg compared to placebo.
Clinical trials suggest that hibiscus extract can modestly reduce total cholesterol and LDL levels while increasing HDL cholesterol, likely through inhibition of lipid accumulation.
The anthocyanins and polyphenols in hibiscus exhibit strong free-radical-scavenging activity, reducing markers of oxidative stress in clinical studies.
1–3 cups daily, or capsules with meals
