Also known as: Lavandula angustifolia, English lavender, Silexan
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a well-known aromatic herb whose essential oil — particularly the standardized oral preparation Silexan — has demonstrated clinically significant anxiolytic effects comparable to low-dose benzodiazepines in multiple randomized controlled trials.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil contains primarily linalool and linalyl acetate, which are responsible for its characteristic calming effects. The standardized oral preparation Silexan (80 mg lavender oil per capsule) has been the subject of numerous rigorous clinical trials. A landmark study published in Phytomedicine showed Silexan was as effective as lorazepam (0.5 mg) for generalized anxiety disorder. Linalool modulates glutamate binding at NMDA receptors, enhances GABAergic transmission, and reduces serotonin receptor binding, contributing to its anxiolytic, sedative, and analgesic properties. Aromatherapy with lavender has also shown benefits for sleep quality, procedural anxiety, and pain perception in multiple systematic reviews. Lavender is available as essential oil for inhalation, the patented Silexan oral capsule, teas, and tinctures. It is generally well tolerated, with the most common side effect being mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Silexan is approved as a phytomedicine for anxiety in Germany.
Multiple RCTs demonstrate that Silexan (80 mg/day oral lavender oil) significantly reduces anxiety scores, with one trial showing comparable efficacy to lorazepam 0.5 mg for generalized anxiety disorder.
Systematic reviews of lavender aromatherapy and oral supplementation show significant improvements in self-reported sleep quality in healthy individuals and patients with anxiety or insomnia.
Once daily, typically in the evening
Silexan (80 mg) is the most clinically studied form. Do not ingest non-food-grade essential oils. Effects typically observed within 2–4 weeks.
