Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid that initiates protein synthesis and serves as the precursor to SAMe, cysteine, and taurine. It plays key roles in methylation, detoxification, and antioxidant defense.
L-Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid and the universal initiator of protein translation, as all eukaryotic proteins begin with a methionine residue. Beyond protein synthesis, methionine is metabolically converted to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), the body's principal methyl group donor, which participates in over 100 methylation reactions governing gene expression, neurotransmitter metabolism, and lipid processing. Through the transsulfuration pathway, methionine is also the dietary precursor to cysteine, glutathione, and taurine. Methionine supports liver function by acting as a lipotropic agent, helping to prevent fatty liver by promoting phosphatidylcholine synthesis and fat metabolism. Adequate methionine intake is particularly important for wound healing, hair and nail growth, and maintaining sulfur balance.
