Also known as: Moringa oleifera, Drumstick tree, Horseradish tree
Moringa oleifera is a nutrient-dense tropical plant with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Its leaves are exceptionally rich in vitamins, minerals, and bioactive isothiocyanates studied for blood sugar regulation and lipid modulation.
Moringa oleifera, often called the 'miracle tree,' is native to the Indian subcontinent and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. Its leaves contain over 90 nutrients including vitamins A, C, and E, calcium, potassium, and all essential amino acids. The primary bioactive compounds are isothiocyanates (notably moringin), quercetin, and chlorogenic acid, which contribute to its antioxidant capacity. Clinical studies show moringa leaf powder reduces fasting blood glucose by enhancing insulin sensitivity and inhibiting alpha-glucosidase. It lowers total cholesterol and triglycerides in hyperlipidemic patients. The isothiocyanates activate Nrf2 signaling, upregulating endogenous antioxidant enzymes. Moringa also has documented anti-inflammatory effects through suppression of iNOS and COX-2 expression. Available as leaf powder, capsules, and tea, it is generally well tolerated though high doses may cause digestive upset.
Moringa leaf powder reduces fasting blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetics. Isothiocyanates improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, reducing postprandial glucose spikes.
Clinical trials demonstrate that moringa leaf supplementation significantly reduces total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides while modestly increasing HDL cholesterol in hyperlipidemic subjects.
