Also known as: L-Ornithine, Ornithine HCl
Ornithine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid involved in the urea cycle, helping the body eliminate ammonia. It is commonly supplemented to reduce exercise-induced fatigue and support growth hormone release during sleep.
L-Ornithine is a free amino acid that does not appear in proteins but plays a central role in the urea cycle, the metabolic pathway by which the body detoxifies ammonia produced during protein metabolism. By accelerating ammonia clearance, ornithine may reduce fatigue during prolonged exercise and improve recovery. Several studies suggest that ornithine supplementation before sleep can stimulate growth hormone secretion, which has downstream effects on tissue repair and body composition. It is frequently combined with arginine, as both amino acids participate in the urea cycle and may synergistically support nitric oxide production and ammonia disposal.
Ornithine accelerates ammonia detoxification via the urea cycle, reducing blood ammonia levels during prolonged exercise and thereby decreasing perceived fatigue.
Supplementation with ornithine before bedtime has been shown to increase nocturnal growth hormone secretion in some trials, supporting tissue repair and recovery.
A placebo-controlled trial found that ornithine supplementation improved subjective sleep quality and reduced cortisol levels the following morning.
