Also known as: Lapacho, Taheebo, Tabebuia avellanedae
Pau d'Arco is the inner bark of several Tabebuia tree species native to South America, traditionally used for infections and inflammation. Its key compound, beta-lapachone, shows antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, but human clinical evidence is very limited.
Pau d'Arco (also known as Lapacho or Taheebo) refers to the inner bark of trees in the genus Tabebuia (primarily Tabebuia avellanedae and Tabebuia impetiginosa), native to the rainforests of Central and South America. It has a long history of use in traditional South American medicine for treating infections, fevers, and inflammatory conditions. The principal bioactive compounds are naphthoquinones, particularly lapachol and beta-lapachone, which have demonstrated antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties in laboratory studies. Beta-lapachone has attracted particular interest in cancer research for its ability to activate NQO1-dependent cell death pathways. However, the transition from promising in vitro results to clinical application has been challenging. The therapeutic doses needed to achieve antimicrobial or anticancer effects in humans may exceed tolerable levels, and clinical trials in humans are scarce. Pau d'Arco is primarily consumed as a bark tea or in capsule form for immune support and general wellness.
Lapachol and beta-lapachone from pau d'arco bark have demonstrated broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity in vitro, including against Candida species and Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical validation in humans is lacking.
Beta-lapachone has been shown to inhibit NF-kB signaling and reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine production in cell and animal models, suggesting potential anti-inflammatory applications.
Divided into 2–3 cups throughout the day
Bark must be simmered (decocted) for 15–20 minutes, not simply steeped. No standardized clinical dosing has been established. Limit use to short periods (2–3 weeks).
Traditional preparation and general immune support
