Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a phospholipid consisting of choline, phosphoric acid, glycerol, and two fatty acids. It constitutes 40–50% of cellular membrane phospholipids and is critical for membrane fluidity, signaling, and lipid transport. PC is the body's primary source of choline, an essential nutrient required for acetylcholine synthesis, one-carbon metabolism, and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) secretion from the liver. Supplemental PC is used clinically for liver support, particularly in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and is being researched for cognitive enhancement and intestinal barrier function. Lecithin supplements, derived from soy or sunflower, are the most common form and typically contain 20–30% phosphatidylcholine.
PC is essential for VLDL assembly and hepatic fat export. Deficiency leads to fat accumulation in the liver. Supplementation has shown benefits in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
