Also known as: 2-Aminoethanesulfonic acid
Taurine is a conditionally essential sulfur-containing amino acid abundant in the heart, brain, and retina. It supports cardiovascular function, acts as a cellular antioxidant, and plays important roles in bile acid conjugation and osmoregulation.
Taurine is a beta-amino sulfonic acid (not a true amino acid in the classical sense, as it lacks a carboxyl group) that is one of the most abundant free amino acids in the human body. It is concentrated in excitable tissues such as the heart, brain, skeletal muscle, and retina. Taurine serves multiple physiological roles: it stabilizes cell membranes, regulates calcium signaling in cardiac muscle, conjugates bile acids for fat digestion, and acts as an inhibitory neuromodulator via GABA-A receptor activation. A landmark 2023 study published in Science demonstrated that taurine supplementation extended healthy lifespan in mice by up to 10% and improved markers of aging across multiple organ systems. Taurine levels decline with age in humans, and supplementation has been studied for cardiovascular protection, exercise performance, and metabolic health. It has an excellent safety profile and is widely consumed in energy drinks, though its effects in those products are primarily attributed to caffeine.
Taurine regulates calcium homeostasis in cardiomyocytes, reduces blood pressure, and has antiarrhythmic properties. Meta-analyses show supplementation reduces systolic blood pressure by approximately 3–4 mmHg.
A 2023 Science study showed taurine deficiency as a driver of aging in animals. Supplementation extended healthy lifespan in mice, improved bone density, immune function, and metabolic markers.
