Also known as: Tribulus terrestris, Puncture Vine, Gokshura
Tribulus terrestris is a flowering plant used in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to support urinary tract health, libido, and vitality. While widely marketed as a testosterone booster, clinical evidence for this claim remains limited.
Tribulus terrestris is a small, flowering plant in the Zygophyllaceae family found across warm and tropical regions worldwide. Its fruits, leaves, and roots have been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine (as Gokshura) and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The primary bioactive compounds are steroidal saponins, particularly protodioscin and protogracillin, which are believed to mediate its biological effects. Despite extensive marketing as a natural testosterone enhancer, controlled clinical trials have consistently failed to demonstrate significant increases in serum testosterone levels in healthy men. However, Tribulus may support sexual function through other mechanisms, including enhanced nitric oxide production and androgen receptor sensitivity. More robust evidence supports its traditional use for urinary tract health and as a mild diuretic.
Some clinical trials suggest modest improvements in sexual desire and erectile function with Tribulus supplementation, particularly in men with mild erectile dysfunction, though results are inconsistent.
Tribulus has demonstrated diuretic properties and may help reduce symptoms of urinary tract discomfort, consistent with its traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine for kidney and bladder support.
