Also known as: Curcuma longa, Indian Saffron
Turmeric is a golden-yellow spice whose active compound curcumin is one of the most extensively studied natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents. Clinical evidence supports its use for joint health, inflammatory conditions, and general well-being.
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizomatous plant of the ginger family that has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine. Its primary bioactive compound, curcumin, accounts for roughly 3% of turmeric powder by weight and is responsible for both its characteristic yellow colour and its pharmacological activity. Curcumin modulates numerous molecular targets including NF-κB, COX-2, and various cytokines, exerting potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. A major limitation is its poor oral bioavailability, which has led to the development of enhanced formulations such as curcumin combined with piperine (from black pepper), liposomal curcumin, and phytosome complexes. Hundreds of randomised controlled trials have evaluated curcumin for conditions ranging from osteoarthritis and metabolic syndrome to depression and inflammatory bowel disease, with the strongest evidence supporting its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Multiple meta-analyses confirm that curcumin supplementation significantly reduces markers of systemic inflammation (CRP, IL-6) and improves pain and function scores in osteoarthritis comparable to NSAIDs.
Curcumin neutralises free radicals directly and also upregulates endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, protecting cells from oxidative stress.
Several RCTs indicate that curcumin supplementation (1,000 mg/day) reduces depressive symptoms, potentially through modulation of serotonin and dopamine pathways and reduction of neuroinflammation.
Divided into 2–3 doses with meals containing fat
Use bioavailability-enhanced forms or combine with 5–20 mg piperine. Standard turmeric powder contains only ~3% curcumin.
Divided into 2 doses with meals
Benefits typically appear after 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Phytosome forms may require lower doses.
